Photographic documents in academic libraries: ways to represent

The photograph is one of the main sources of visual information. Along with text editions it captures the historical events and is an essential element of cultural heritage. By their very nature the photograph rarely is a part of the Research Libraries fund. The collection, processing, storage and provide users with documentary photographs is often the prerogative of the archives, museums or the largest national and special libraries. With the development of IT and the Internet in academic libraries it became possible to exhibit the collection of graphic materials in electronic form. Analysis of the domestic libraries sites has shown that there are currently at least three ways of presenting information about the images funds: database, photo album and the use of photo hosting. The creating of the database is the most complicated form of organization of photo documents. To create a database you need to carry out serious preparatory work, enabling the development of the scientific description of each photo document. The most common form of picture-collection on the library website is an electronic photo album. Technical realization of digital photo albums is less labor-intensive than creating an electronic catalog or database, since it does not require a detailed bibliographic description of the document. And finally, the third way of representing libraries digital collections of photographs - use photo hosting. Large domestic academic and university libraries are used mainly as a photo sharing site Flickr and Instagram. The article gives examples of each of these methods of documentary photographs on the websites of Russian libraries. In 2013, as a gift to Branch of the SPSTL was transferred a large collection of photographs on the history of Russian Academy of Sciences from the press center of the Presidium of the Siberian Branch. The library staff had no experience with documentary photographs and a study was conducted to determine the method of photo processing. At the moment the collection of original photos is ordered and stored in folders according to the classification developed. Photos are widely used in the preparation of thematic exhibitions of both traditional and electronic. We will to make the collection accessible to millions of users in the electronic environment. Information resource on the photo archive is designed to reflect the unique collection of photographic documents of informing them of the scientific community and historians use in the education of the younger generation, preservation of cultural heritage.
