Alonso Madrigal El Tostado in a series of portraits of outstanding Spaniards from Stroganov book collection

In the article the figure of the outstanding Spanish erudite theologian of the 15th century, professor of the Salamanca University, the author of numerous works, the adviser to the king Enrique II, the bishop of Avila is considered. The description of a portrait of Alonso de Madrigal presented in a series of portraits of outstanding Spaniards is given, the interpretation of an image which is focused on a creative essence of portrayed reveals. It is emphasized that the genre of a chamber portrait chosen for an engraving allows to focus on reproduction of the inner world of the represented as much as possible. Graphic and verbal portraits of the humanist are compared with use of written sources. The historiographic tradition of appretiation of Madrigal's creativity ascending by the time of his life, developing in the age of Enlightenment and finding a new impulse in researches of modern researchers is analyzed. The author shows in article that, despite a certain burden of medieval scholasticism, Tostado's works are analyzed today in the context of studying of such current problems as genesis of the Spanish humanism, the Spanish Proto-Renaissance, a role of the university in development and distribution of the humanistic ideas. Such approach allows to reveal the humanistic lines peculiar to the Madrigal position that is most obviously shown in his huge interest and respect for antique authors and in reflection concerning the person and his creativity. The subject of his works covers such areas as classical philology, Latin, comments to works of the Roman, Greek and medieval authors. Thus the Salamanca professor puts antique authors on one level with sources of Christian tradition that obviously confirms existence of humanistic elements in outlook of the scholar. The Greek-Latin perspective in the works of Tostado concerning language, mythology, the ideas of statehood and civil acts, becomes apparent thus, as one of early examples of distribution of elements of humanistic consciousness in Spain of the 15th century.
