The musical and scenic composition for the reader and Russian folk orchestra of Alexey Larin "Till third cockcrow": the features of the genre embodiment

In the works for an orchestra of national instruments there are techniques connected with scenic art. These features are inherent in the composition written in 1980 - musical illustrations to V. Shukshin's story "Till third cockcrow". It was created for the Russian national orchestra. Originally, A. Larin created a musical and scenic composition on the basis of which the author made a cycle of orchestral plays. Its genre was defined as "musical illustrations". The musical illustrations "Till third cockcrow" by A. Larin represent the 5-part suite which included the most significant musical pieces from the dramaturgic point of view: "Once upon a time in a faraway kingdom", "A quarrel in the library", "A Russian song", "The world itch", "A fight". Each part of the suite is somehow an embodiment of a certain sphere of images. In a plot there are several characteristic figurative spheres: bright national characters (Ivan the Fool, his adherents - Ilya Muromets, Stenka Razin); the characters creating a peculiar atmosphere - an allegory of the modern mixed society with its settled stereotypes (Oblomov, Onegin, Lensky, Acakiy Akakiyevich, Poor Lisa, Kontorsky, etc.); the important place both in the story, and in the music of the suite "Till third cockcrow" belongs to the sphere of images of the evil (Dragon Gorynych, the witch Baba-yaga, devils). The first one is mainly connected with the images of Russian folklore and epos; the second one represents an eclectic mixture of types, the author made it sharp and satirical. The author made Images of the evil quite ambiguous. So, for example, the image of Dragon Gorynych in the story is both frightening and sentimental. The characters of Russian folklore and epos are related to the corresponding genre and style of national melodies. The author's melodies sounding like Russian songs can be heard in the suite. The images connected with the evil spirits are specific from the point of view of stylistics. The author refers to Russian folk orchestra involving various percussion instruments, pipes like a peculiar jazz band. The jazz stylistics characterizes such elements of the musical language as a rhythm, harmonic and impressive thinking, timbre dramatic art. The orchestral suite by A. Larin "Till third cockcrow" is an original composition from the point of view of the scenic techniques. It involves the principles of development characteristic of the musical and theatrical genres. It is proven by the system of leitmotifs. Also the composite and dramaturgic structure of the suite contains several arch type communications. An important role belongs to the so-called "timbres characters". All these things, alongside with the unique literary fundamental principle of the composition, allow to define the suite for Russian folk orchestra of A. Larin "Till third cockcrow" as a synthetic work in accordance with its genre and style.
