Library in a cultural landscape of the city (on the example of Ulan-Ude)

At the present stage the cultural landscape of the Russian cities gains new lines. Considerable impact on his formation is exerted by such factors as existence of large manufacturing enterprises, development of infrastructure, population, education level of inhabitants, the size of their salary, etc. Features of development of a cultural landscape of Ulan-Ude are defined that the capital of the Republic of Buryatia combines historical traditions and modern innovations. He is distinguished by religious tolerance. The city is the center of the Russian Buddhism, but in him Orthodoxy, the Buddhism and Islam peacefully coexist. The proximity to Lake Baikal contributes to the development of such types of tourism as cultural, religious, ecological. Existence of the specified factors dictates the special terms to the organization of cultural space of the city. In his formation traditional leisure institutions, such as libraries, museums, recreation centers continue to play an important role. However in comparison with the previous periods their activity decreases because of disinterest of the population in the services and products offered by them. Low level of financing and a lack of attention from the authorities, leads to the fact that leisure institutions aren't able to conform to requirements of time. Funds of libraries become outdated, the computer equipment isn't updated and as a result - low attendance and lack of interest in them from citizens. Problems of self-identification of libraries in modern society acquire special relevance today. Definition of a role of these public institutes in life of the cities and formation of a cultural landscape will allow to define the perspective directions of development of libraries, to develop measures for increase in their prestige. The relevance of a problem is demonstrated by the scientific and practical conferences and seminars held at the different levels. Carrying out the Round table “Library in cultural space of the city” became one of significant actions in cultural life of Ulan-Ude. More than 70 people have taken part in his work. The preliminary preparatory work including the organization of poll of citizens about the place of libraries in city lives has given the chance to allocate the most sensitive issues which have been considered on the Round table. Attraction to his work not only the staff of libraries, but also representatives of various public organizations of the city and just active citizens, has allowed to approach structurally discussion of a question, to define painful points and to plan ways of development of Municipal authority of culture “The central library system” of Ulan-Ude.
