Periodicals as a way of shaping the corporate culture of religious educational institutes

This research is aimed at identifving the contribution of periodicals to the formation of corporate culture and the positioning of Orthodox theological schools in the information space; determination of approaches of editors of journals to work with various target audiences. During the studv, more than 50 scientific and educational journals were analvzed; identified trends in the development of publishing theological schools from the middle of the XIX centurv to the present. In 1821, Metropolitan Grigorv (Postnikov) founded the “Christian Reading” journal at the St. Petersburg Theological Academv, therebv laving foundation of official ecclesiastical journalism. Then scientific journals appeared in the Moscow, Kiev and Kazan Theological Academies. The journals contained articles on church historv, theologv, historiographv and source studv, philosophv, liturgv, church archeologv, church law, pedagogv, psvchologv and philologv. There were published materials on the historv of Old Believers and Old Russian ecclesiastical literature; reviews, bibliographv, materials on modern church life. In the 1990s, after the revival of ecclesiastical education in Russia, the Moscow and St. Petersburg Theological Academies continued to publish scientific journals under the same names - “The Theological Herald” and “Christian Reading”. Scientific journals are published in the Orthodox St. Tikhon Humanities Universitv, the Russian Christian Academv of Humanities, the Russian Orthodox Universitv of St. John the Evangelist, St. Philaret Orthodox Christian Institute, theological seminaries. Also collections of materials of conferences held in them are published. Scientific articles, materials of seminars, scientific discussions are published in journals and collections; archival materials, conference reviews, reviews of the latest scientific literature, translations of researchers of leading foreign experts. At present, almost all journals and collections are included in the database of the Russian Science Citation Index, and some of the journals are included in the “List of leading peer-reviewed scientific publications in which the main scientific results of dissertations for the degree of Doctor and Candidate of Science should be published” in theologv, philosophv and historv. Since 2010s, electronic versions of journals and collections are posted on the websites of educational institutions or speciallv created websites of journals. The immediate goals of editorial councils are to increase the impact factors of journals, to enter the international bases “Scopus” and “Web of Science”. Periodicals can also be viewed as a wav of shaping the corporate culture of religious educational institutes (“Nevskv theologian”, “Your Church”, “Pokrov”, etc.). The tasks of the journals are to acquaint the public with the student life of ecclesiastical educational institutions “from the inside”; to form an image of a student as a thinking and versatile personalitv, open to new things; to promote the recruitment of applicants. Magazines are characterized bv high-qualitv design, the presence of color illustrations and photographs. But, it should be noted, compared with scientific journals, their number is much smaller; the frequencv of releases is not alwavs respected. Thus, the journals of ecclesiastical educational institutes, having become a noticeable phenomenon in the field of religious education in pre-revolutionarv Russia, continue their activities todav, filling it with new directions and meanings, solving research, popularization and image task.
