“Audio reading” as a modern modification of auditory reading

The topic of the article is in the plane of research issues of an interdisciplinary nature. On the one hand, this is a research vector related to the study of communication channels in modern media conditions, on the other hand, it is an examination of the problems of book culture, which are associated with understanding both the forms of existence of a book and the types of reading practices in different eras. The relevance of the topic is due to the increased interest in the problems of media consumption in modern conditions of the transformation of forms and methods of storage, translation, receipt and processing of information. The research focus of the article is “audio reading”, which has become widespread in the context of the great popularity of audio books among modern consumers of media content. “Audio reading” is regarded as a form of existence of the auditory reading in terms of development and the wide availability of technologies. The article highlights two key milestones in the development of auditory reading. The first milestone is the existence of auditory reading in the preliterate era, when the sounding word was the main source of information and knowledge. The second milestone is associated with qualitative changes in the material and technical base both for creating audio recordings and for their replication and use. It is the second milestone associated with the creative scoring of literary texts initially in the genre of radio shows, and then audio books. This new form of auditory reading development is a prerequisite for the formation of “auditory literature”, which is opposed to print. Auditory literature is not a form of existence of oral creativity, but is secondary to print. In this sense, auditory reading in its audio variant is an integral element of the communicative activity of modern man. This circumstance determines its internal diversity. It can perform different functions, determined by the needs of the listener-reader: developmental, pragmatic-functional and aesthetic by analogy with traditional reading. The functional diversity of audio reading is a sure testament to the internal sustainable dynamics of its development and vitality in modern media conditions of book culture. In addition to the growing popularity of audio books, the revival of the tradition of reading aloud helps to strengthen the authority of the sounding word. This way of interacting with the book, which is included in the practice of joint reading, is evidence of a revival of interest in the sounding word, its capabilities not only in transmitting information, but also in transmitting semantic connotations.
