Library of the University of Salamanca in the context of its 800th anniversary
The Salamanca University celebrates its 800th anniversary with the program of actions under patronage of the Spanish king Philip VI. The University has rich historical heritage and, commitment to humanistic values and leadership at the Ibero-American higher school. The purpose of the article is to reveal the contribution of the Salamanca University Library to the implementation of the Jubilee Programme. The library of Salamanca created slightly later, became one of the most important European university libraries. It stores the book heritage having intellectual, art and spiritual value. Donation as a common way to replenish the library 's fund for centuries has contributed to the formation of the library 's fund with real book treasures. Examples of book gifts in the era of intensive development and the rise of the University of Salamanca in the 15th-16th centuries are the donation of Bishop Diego de Anaya and the gift of theologian Juan de Segovia/Also the library history with its material embodiment in the spaces created by the University is important. An example of that is the hall, for the first time in Salamanca University history equipped as the library and with ceiling painted by Fernando Gallego. Preservation and promoting the oldest Spanish University bibliographic heritage are the main functions of the Historical library. The library made its contribution to the anniversary actions. The most valuable Salamanca University's manuscripts were displayed in National Library of Spain in 2017. Restoration of the Petrarch's book “About means against vicissitudes of life”, published in Valladolid in 1510 was carried out. The exhibition “The Sky of Salamanca. Art and astronomy on the ceiling of the old university library” opened in Salamanca in 2018 became an important event. The successful actions connected with book treasures and library history confirm their compliance to one of strategic objectives of Salamanca University anniversary celebration which consists in promoting its cultural heritage.
