“Music theory” as a subject of study at the directing faculty of the university

The relevance of the topic is due to the huge and ever-increasing role of music in modern art in general and theatrical art in particular. Based on the logical analysis of the problem of synthesis of music and drama, the article identifies and analyzes the functions of music in theatrical art. On this basis, the objectives of the educational course “theory of music” are substantiated, and the concept of the methodology of its study, tested by the author and optimal for a theater university, is proposed, the central link of which is composing music as a way of mastering its theory, expressive means and communicative capabilities. In order to substantiate the need to study music at a theater university, the issue of its specifics is considered. It is shown that, unlike other types of art, music has no “subject-event” content. There is no plot in it, no reflection of real-life events, visible pictures of the world, or semantic specifics. The “subjectivity” of the musical image, created by the subject of perception, is the result of the listener’s creativity, which, in turn, makes it possible to associate the musical image with specific life events reflected in the theatrical production. Music, combining into a single whole with drama, is able to bring an additional expressive element to the theatrical action reflecting the reality of life, to enhance the emotionality that is present in the drama. The objective basis for the synthesis of music and drama is rhythm, the main common property of architectonics and dramatic action. And in this sense, music is “waiting” for theatricalization, and theatrical production is “musicalizing”. The main problem of studying music at a theater university is that music theory should begin with the study of the “basics”, but reach the understanding of architectonics, semiotics, expressive possibilities, i.e. issues directly related to the director’s work. A university teacher faces a serious problem: how quickly - during a semester - can you explain first “childish” and then complex things from the field of music theory to untrained people who are professionally engaged in theatrical art? The answer reasoned in the article is to study creatively, composing music, which is consistent with the super-task of organizing the educational process at a theater university: to create educational conditions that allow to promote the creative development of a student. The methodological approach to studying music proposed in the article allows you to quickly master its elementary theory and proceed to the main thing - the study of semiotics, the meaningful meanings of musical signs, which is advisable to fit into the context of the subject “music history”. The author declares no conflicts of interests.
