Saving the world: the role of libraries and librarians in preserving and disseminating cultural heritage
Cultural heritage includes many different kind of object including printed materials. Libraries predate the invention of paper and printing and exist to preserve the records of the past and to make possible the creation of the future through use of their collections. The Five Laws of Library Science set out the fundamental principles of library activities. Libraries should be well-organised and welcoming. Librarians need several skills so that the libraries they create and manage can be appropriate and helpful to the needs of users, and non-users.
