In the article the problem of participation of representatives of scientific and pedagogical community in political life at various stages of the Soviet history is considered. The ratio of form and content of social activity of the Soviet scientists is analysed. The focus is on the example of academician V.D. Kuznetsov - the most renowned Siberian physicist and the organizer of science. The main attention is paid to the two important events: the revolution and the civil war and the Soviet-German war of 1941-1945. The organization and work of masterful manuals became the main sphere of V.D. Kuznetsov's activity in the years of revolution and civil war. These workshops became the unique phenomenon in the Russian practice. Over time workshops developed, production was increased. V.D. Kuznetsov's actions leading to the organization of workshops became an important event in his career. The initiative and organizing abilities of the future academician were shown. Workshops of manuals existed till 1922. Anuway, their entire destiny is connected with the events of the revolution and the civil war as well as with the problem of the establishment of the Soviet state and V.D. Kuznetsov's relations with it.The civil war and revolution, despite all the complexity of Kuznetsov's assessment of these events, played a role of the catalyst of his scientific growth and career. The Great Patriotic War allowed V.D. Kuznetsov to show himself ina new light. Right after the beginning of the war a Committee of scientists for assistance to industry, transport and agriculture in the wartime was established in Tomsk. V.D. Kuznetsov was one of initiators of its creation and organizers of its work, holding a position of the vice-chairman. In the years of the war the committee, along with regulating and coordinating the research work of higher educational institutions of the city, gave a direct help to production. Close connections with the production led to the fact that some scientists became constant consultants of plants, and laboratories turned into factories. Such relations were established not only with the enterprises of Tomsk, but also with the plants of other cities of Siberia, the Urals and Kazakhstan. V.D. Kuznetsov played one of the key roles in the Committee and, first of all, it was connected with his status of the head of the Siberian Physics and Technology Institute and his substantial administrative experience. The academician V.D. Kuznetsov was one of those who moved forward the Soviet scientific knowledge in these years. He appeared among those who were demanded in new conditions, whose social functionality was caused by the remarkable adaptive abilities connected with administrative talents.
