Professor K. E. Grinevich: after Siberia
Konstantin Eduardovich Grinevich (1892-1970) is a well-known Russian and Soviet historian, organizer of the archaeological research in the Crimea, a museum expert, an initiator of museum reform in Soviet Russia. Like thousands of other representatives of creative and scientific intellectuals, he was found to be a victim of Stalin’s repression. In 1933-1940 he was exiled and imprisoned in Novosibirsk and Karaganda. In 1940-1948 K. E. Grinevich, a well-known scientist, was entrusted to head the ancient history department at History faculty of Tomsk State University. In 1948 K. E. Grinevich left Siberia, in 1948-1950 he held the position of a Professor at the department of general history Kabarda State pedagogical institute (the city of Nalchik). He was the head of the archaeological expedition that conducted excavations of ancient monuments of Kabarda. In 1950-1953 K. E. Grinevich was Head of general history department of Nezhin State pedagogical institute (Chernigov region, Ukraine). After Stalin’s death in 1953 Professor Grinevich returned to Kharkov. The last period of his scientific activity (1953-1970) turned out to be effective and fruitful. In 1953-1966 he was Head of ancient history and archaeology department at Kharkov State University. He directed large-scale archaeological research of defensive constructions of Olvia’s early historical period. Historical-archaeological research was published in the leading scientific journals in the USSR. In particular, he completed publishing his research of fortification system in Chersonesus of Tavria. This fundamental work still has not lost its scientific actuality and is a kind of platform for further research. K. E. Grinevich initiated an archaeological expedition in Cher-sonesus. His follower, Professor V. I. Kadyeyev, headed this expedition. Chersonesus archaeological expedition of Kharkov University did research in Chersonesus and Chembalo (Balaklava) in 1963-2013. K. E. Grinevich paid special attention to the methodology of conducting archaeological excavations. He did scientific-methodological guidance in reviving the old collection of artefacts and creating new exposition of Kharkov University archaeological museum, Professor Grinevich succeeded in uniting famous specialists (B. A. Shramko, V. I. Kadyeyev, V. K. Mikheyev, V. A. Latysheva) who had directed the development of ancient history and archaeology on Kharkov University and Ukraine in general for many years. Thus, Professor Grinevich’s activity in 1948-1970 promoted the development of antiquity science and archeology in Northern Caucasus and Nezhin, and also revival of antique archaeology at Kharkov University.
