The past and the present of personal digital archives and historical primary sources from the perspective of research literature
Our aim is to identify the main ideas in the scientific literature that help to form the understanding of intrinsic features of personal digital archives as historical sources, and the perspectives of their long-term preservation and introduction into the scientific use. |Among the research studying personal digital archives, we can mark at least three directions: 1) personal information management, PIM; 2) longterm preservation of personal digital materials; 3) research in which digital materials are viewed as historical sources. Historical research is necessarily based on primary sources. There are groups of sources that are traditionally used for specific studies. Materials of personal archives are often used for biographical research, for reconstructing the history of social institutions and for studying everyday history. Today such archives consist of paper and digital documents but the latter tend to become more numerous. The everyday life of a person is captured in their digital archives in a very detailed way, thus, they this archives be viewed as historical primary sources. Today, there is a very limited amount of historical research based on personal digital materials, and the nature and historical value of such documents are yet to be explored. For a historian, PIM research draws a picture of structure, origin, and characteristics of a personal archive. Among them are distributed storage; technological dependency; subtle distinction between private and public. The long-term preservation of digital records is mostly discussed in the archival community. And there, the records appraisal becomes one of the key topics. On one hand, technology allows storing everything; on the other hand, the historical value of documents emerging on a personal level is not obvious. Archival strategies on personal and institutional levels can differ, which raises a question of the authenticity of records. Introducing digital archival collections into scientific use can be challenging as well. Personal digital archives are not widely discussed in the historical community. The authors focus mostly on methods of using digital materials as a primary source for historical research, on how the results of such research can be represented, or they use digital records along with traditional sources. Viewed as historical sources, the materials of personal digital archives are, for now, a terra incognita for historical community. The authors believe: since there are no fundamental scientific works on digital sources, historians might find it useful to turn to the existing archival and PIM research and the historical studies based on digital sources to understand what digital primary sources are, what instruments are there to work with them and what methods and approaches are yet to be laid out.
