All union census and current population statistics (1959-1970s) as statistical resources of ethnical demographic researches

The main purpose of the paper is a description, analysis and classification of materials of All Union Census and current population statistics as resources of ethnical demographic researches. Demographic statistics has been reviewed briefly; practically lack of attention has been paid to the problems of resources that are a basis for the research of reproduction and migration of nationalities. Therefore, results of the paper can attract high scientific interest among ethnologists, demographers and historians that have already been working or are going to work on this problem. Statistical materials that were extracted from central and regional state archives are resources of the paper. It is a complex of systematized tables of All Union Census by 1959 and 1970-s and forms of current statistics where information about number, ages, and social composition of nationalities, information about their birth, mortality, assimilation and areal movements are indicated. During the work it is revealed that All Union Census offer rich factual material that is a basis for definition of a national composition of population not only at the republican, regional level but also in districts, urban settlements and several big villages. In addition, at the regional level fewer details are found. Besides, Census 1970 is different from the previous (1959) that offers more detailed statistical information about regions including big cities (100,0 thousand of population and higher). The most valuable materials are tables that have data about age, educational and social composition of nationalities that help to calculate reproduction rates. Materials of All Union Census offer important information about processes of assimilation that is primarily data about the native language and a number of single-nationality families. More attention is paid to analysis of current statistics, the main forms are considered that are a basis for calculating data about birth rates and mortality. Those that contain information about a number of births, deaths, migration of population, and also assimilation are revealed. It is represented that total fertility rates can be calculated on a basis of the data from the form #2 that contain statistics about a number of births according to age groups and nationalities, and life expectancy according to the data from a form # 4-г. Assimilation processes can be considered with a support on the forms #3, # 7-в where a number of children whose father is of a different nationality and a number of international marriages are indicated. Particular practical examples of these data application are offered. As a result of the paper the authors come to a conclusion that existed statistical resources help to realize a detailed demographic research, define specific features of demographic transition primarily among major nationalities. It is necessary to apply a complex of resources including sociological methods in relation to numerally less ethnical groups.
