Socio-political portrait of youth on the pages of the newspapers “Eastern Outlook” and “Siberian Life” in 1905–1907

The work, based on the materials from the newspapers «Eastern Outlook» and «Siberian Life», examines the socio-political portrait of the younger generation during the First Russian Revolution of 1905 - 1907. The aim of the study is to reconstruct the socio-political portrait of a youth representative in 1905 - 1907 by identifying the main categories of images of representatives of the younger generation. The choice of two mentioned publications is due to the fact that they were distinguished by a liberal orientation and friendly relations, but the nature of the image’s representation varied depending on the publication. The research methodology is defined, which includes methods of comparison, content analysis, intent analysis, as well as the historical and typological method. A brief description of the category «youth» is given, the age limits of youth are determined. In the course of the work, a number of proofs are given in favor of the version about the predominantly positive attitude of the newspaper «Eastern Outlook» to young people due to the ideologization of the editorial office of the publication. The strict regional orientation of the «Eastern Outlook» dictated to the editorial office the need to censor the materials received by the newspaper. The arguments explaining the ambivalence of the position of representatives of the «Siberian Life» in relation to the younger generation are presented. This is due to the less strict censorship framework of the publication. A wide range of Siberian social forces collaborated with the editorial office, including the leaders of the regional movement. In the final part of the study, the main categories of youth images found in the reviewed periodicals are highlighted: student, young soldier, protester, worker. The conclusion was made about the positive or negative nature of certain categories. Some of the mentioned categories were characterized by a duality of coloring, and they could be used in both positive and negative contexts. The study also contained neutral categories.
