“Lady is delicate, she may take offense”: economic strategies of lady-in-waiting E.N. Petrishcheva in the second half of the 19th century
The 1860s in the Russian Empire are marked by significant changes in all areas of people's lives. These changes were made possible by the new emperor Alexander II (1855-1881) and the reforms he realized. The economic crisis of 1859 and the emergence of new public associations, as well as a new group of society intelligentsia, contributed to the active search for additional financial support, including seeking the benefits of their social position. At this time lady-in-waiting of the imperial court Elizabeth Petrishcheva began her economic activities. Trying at the same time to raise funds and present herself as a mediator between the small bureaucracy and the judicial society, the maiden was forced to take new loans to repay the old ones. The article examines how Petrishcheva attempted to use her social status as the close one to the emperor and corruption scheme to increase her income. In addition, the paper analyses how the Ministry of the Imperial Court and the royal family reacted to the lady-in-waiting's illegal economic activities. The basis of the research source foundation consists of the office correspondence between the Ministry of the Imperial Court and the Third Section of His Imperial Majesty's Own Chancellery. The author focuses on the order of illegal credit transactions, identifies the main participants of departmental proceedings on the E. Petrishcheva's activities, examines the decisions of the guilty. The article attaches importance to the emperor's reaction to the lady-in-waiting's actions and the attempt of the Ministry of the Imperial Court to avoid publicity in this case. As a result of the conducted research, the status of lady-in-waiting was significant and prestigious for persons who not included in the court society. Elizabeth Petrishcheva is a vivid representative of the Great Reforms period: due to the financial crisis she had to look for new ways to provide for herself, trying to monetize her high social status as a lady-inwaiting. The restrained reaction of Emperor Alexander II allowed her to continue receiving loans from private lenders. The author declares no conflicts of interests.
