Criticism of the concept of “Peasant Wars in Russiaˮ in Western historiography
The purpose of the article is to identify the features and analyze the views of Western historians on the concept of "Peasant Wars in Russia", formulated by Soviet historical science in the period from the 1930s to the 1970s on the basis of the Marxist methodology of history. For the first time, such a goal becomes the subject of special scientific research. The article examines the controversy between Soviet and Western historians around the concept of "Peasant Wars in Russia." It is shown that the concept began to take shape in the 1930s. It was finally formed in the 50-70s of the XX century. The views of Soviet historians immediately caused a flood of critical publications in Western historiography. The research's source base consists of monographs and articles by American, French, German, British, Canadian, and Italian historians published abroad or translated into Russian. Without accepting the Marxist theory of class struggle, Western historians did not agree that the largest popular uprisings in Russia in the 17th and 18th centuries were peasant wars. At the same time, Western scientists criticized the concept of "Peasant Wars in Russia" not from theoretical, but from factual positions. It is concluded that the criticism under study proved to be ineffective, since it is impossible to debunk the Marxist concept by taking other (non-Marxist) methodological positions. The modern practice of using the term "peasant war" has nothing to do with the concept of "Peasant Wars in Russia". The author declares no conflicts of interests.
