Geoinformation technologies in the study the settlement network of the Altai in the 1920s

Identification of spatial patterns of development of territories in present time it is difficult to imagine without the use of GIStechnologies. In the 1920s the settlement network in the Altai region in terms of quantity reaches its maximum size, and the rural settlementscover practically the whole territory of Altai territory. However, the spatial aspects of the localities studied, in our opinion, there are still notenough. One of the major advantages of GIS - possibility of binding data of different kinds and types, the actual geographic information thatcan be gleaned from various sources, as well as external data stored in the format spreadsheets, and databases. We used the digital map of theAltai territory. It was laid in the basis of GIS on the existing human settlements of the region (implemented with the use of the MapInfo 7.8),on the basis of which it was decided to analyze location of settlements in the 1920s. On the basis of «the List of populated places of the Siberianregion» was created data base, which can be connected with GIS on the existing human settlements of the Altai. In the 1920s the intensiveeducation of settlements takes place in all without exception regions of Altai. From the point of view of density of the settlement networkclearly there are several groups of regions. One of the most powerful - north-east. It is in the period under review, show significantgrowth of the settlement network. In this region there are many settlements and villages, communes, farms and squattings. In the easternregions - Soltonsky and Krasnogorsky population of a few below. There also appear many villages and farms, less - squattings. Clearly allocatedon the general background and the foothills of the Altai mountains, including the number of south-eastern and southern regions. Thesettlement network there is also comprises a large number of settlements, farms, but especially a lot of squattings. Very noticeably one of thecentral districts of the region - Shipunovsky. Here the absolute predominance of settlements. The growth of the settlement network are almostthe same as in the north-eastern regions. The central regions of the Altai are populated densely enough and their settlement network inthe first half of the 1920s grows in the main towns. The western districts of the Altai region have developed quite late. More dense settlementnetwork is observed in the north-western districts, less than in the west, although the number of population in 1926, the western regions, onthe contrary, prevail. Thus, by the middle of the 1920-ies of the Altai territory was populated by quite evenly, with the exception of a numberof western and south-western regions. The use of geoinformation technologies allows you to take a fresh look at the development of the region, providing wide opportunities for spatial analysis of objects of the settlement network and settlement system as a whole.
