The steamers of Izhevsk's plants
To the early oftwentieth century, Izhevsk arms and steel-producing plants formed one of the leading Russian arsenals, and for their further developmentneeded to build ships in the waters of the Izhevsk lake. For the timber needed to organize its transportation to the area Volozhka, and for thetransport of the labor force - with a steamer line to Koltoma. At this time, Votkinsk factory was one of the leading river shipbuilding, despitethe fact that the industry was planned for the plant unprofitable. Traditionally, it's known that 1892 - the date of the beginning of thenavigation at the Izhevsk lake. However, analysis of archival documents and literary sources suggests that in 1892 Votkinsk factory wasdesigned only a first draft of the ship to Izhevsk lake. And, judging by the river registers the date of commencement of navigation on the lakeshould be moved for ten years - to 1902. Probably, the transfer to Izhevsk set of drawings had to create a steamer by independent efforts, dueto the extremely time-consuming operation of ship's transport from the wharf Goliany to Izhevsk. Analysis of river registers suggests that theforces of Izhevsk factories in the period from 1898-1902 years were built at least two ships - "Izhevsk" and "Maria." It is also likely that thequality of building ships did not satisfy the management of factories, and they were sold into private hands. Instead on the Votkinsk orderedand built two ships "Izh" and "Shrapnel" delivered at the Izhevsk pond on a specially constructed for this purpose, a sleigh. Existing in theregional literature review on the presence of the lake four factory ships is not confirmed at the disposal of the authors sources. This isconfirmed by the factory archival documents - statements to carry out repairs, documentation, and other transportation services, as well asoral sources. Historians mistakenly shared the name of the ships and the nicknames. Probably, the reason for this error was the informationabout the four ships - two of factory ships and two, that built at the factory. An analysis of archival factory documentation suggests that theordered on Votkinsk steamers had many defects, to remedy which was easier to establish their own repair. The above reconstruction ofevents is a logical attempt to integrate available to the authors of fragmentary references to the Izhevsk factory ships. It is likely, with theintroduction of new instruments in circulation picture of shipbuilding and ship repair in Izhevsk will be reviewed. Nevertheless, with allconfidence it can be argued that there shipbuilding and ship repair in the Izhevsk factory.
