Population of Tomsk and Tomsk districts according to the data of All-Union census of 1939

Census of population ensures information, necessary for the administrative, economic and sociocultural development. In order to get the information there was organized All-Union census in 1937. But Soviet government was not satisfied with its results, and census was rejected. The new All-Union census was conducted in 1939. It was all right with government approval. Nevertheless the results of census were published only in part. Now we can explain it because that census did not confirm many of achievements declared by authority. The whole corpus of census materials was sent to the archive. Now the results of census of 1939 are founded in Russian State Archive of Economics, and some researchers are publishing them. Census materials contain unique information of population of territory now known as Tomsk region. The systematization of the information of the census of 1939 makes it possible to operate of statistic data of two cities Tomsk and Kolpashevo and two working settlements - Mogochino and Samus. There were more than 170 thousand townspeople, 26,8 percent of all inhabitants of Tomsk region. The census had been fixed almost 470 thousand rural folk, or 73,2 percent of all inhabitants of Tomsk edge. In comparison with census data of 1926 we can see an extremely large increase in the number of rural population in the Tomsk edge (more than 3,6 times). And it is known that the peasant population showed very small upturn or even reduced, for example in Altai. The main reason of it was the forced transportation of peasants from the southern regions of Siberia to the northern territories of Tomsk region. And exiled peasants made the overwhelming majority of rural folks of Narym okrug, formed as administrative formation in 1932. Alexandrovsk, Bakchar, Kargasok, Kolpashevo, Parabel, Tym, Chainsk districts were included in Narym okrug. It was significant that woman population predominated over men of Tomsk edge in Thirties. For example the portion of women was 54 percent of all inhabitants of Tomsk and 51,5 percent of population of the rural districts in 1939. Such disproportion in the sexual structure of population was explained as deficiency in the industrial development of Tomsk edge. Actually those disproportion reflected significant increase in the call into the Red Army, political repressions and so on. The census of 1939 included important data of ethnic structure of the population of Tomsk region. There were fixed the representatives of 63 ethnic groups in Tomsk. More than 90 percent of Tomsk townspeople were Russian. And Russian represented 86,6 percent of all inhabitants in the rural locality. At the same time census of 1939 noted of rather big number of Ukrainians, Belorussians, Tatary, Mordva, Chuvashy in Tomsk edge.
