Two virtuosos: Leonid Maximov and Pavel Vinogradov
Graduates of the Moscow Conservatory pianists Leonid Aleksandrovich Maximov and Pavel Mikhailovich Vinogradov played a significant role in the development of musical culture of pre-revolutionary Tomsk. The activities of these musicians are scarcely covered in musical criticism. Their work in Tomsk is analyzed in this article. Leonid Maksimov's life was too short and ended in Russia, and Pavel Vinogradov was destined to live a long life and to die away from his motherland. Years of directorship of Maksimov (1897-1899) occurred in the period of establishment of musical classes. Then it was just 4 years since the classes comprising three departments started: piano, vocals and violin. The article describes the activities of the two musicians as leaders of the musical institution. It provides some details of personal qualities of the musicians. Pianist Pavel Vinogradov assumed the post of Director in the autumn of 1913 and left Tomsk in 1915. This article contains information on versatile activities of Vinogradov in Tomsk musical College. The class of thirty students was involved in Vinogradov's mandatory program, and twenty pupils outside the course lessons took part in the program too. In addition, Vinogradov taught instrumentation to some students. In addition, Pavel Mikhailovich tauhgt instrumental ensemble and for some time acted as a conductor of the Symphony Orchestra of the school. This article discusses archival materials with programs of piano concerts. The presented materials contribute to the picture of musical life in the city at the turn of XIX-XX centuries.
