S.M. Slonimsky. Concerto for alto and chamber orchestra “Tragicomedy”
The article addresses the peculiarities of the concerto genre from the perspective of S.M. Slonimsky works, and is illustrates them by «Tragicomedy», S.M. Slonimsky's last concerto for alto and chamber orchestra. The analysis is based on the comparison of «Tragicomedy» with «Crime and Punishment» by F.M. Dostoevsky. The concerto's recurring main theme (cadence of the soloist) and grotesque themes are characterized by a variety of forms and expressions, and represent the conflict between the good and the evil. All that characterizes S.M. Slonimsky's original style in this particular work as well as in the others is the use of a wide range of the means of musical expression which were determined by the concerto's elaborate concept.
