WORLD UNIVERSITY RANKINGS IMPACT ON EDUCATION QUALITY

World University Rankings as a social entity emerged 16 years ago in 2003. And since that time number of rankings increased from 1 to 20. Considering such a diversity a question arises: how does these tools impact on global higher education? Topics related with rankings influence on university education quality are observed in this paper. Characterization of education market as internationally competitive environment between national university systems is given. The classification of the most relevant for world and national ranking systems is provided; indicators and metrics reflecting efficiency and quality of research & education institutional activities and its influence on the society is also overviewed in this paper. Special attention is paid to the most authoritative world rankings such as ARWU, THE WUR, QS WUR and their role in university competitiveness increasing and shaping the national image in the framework of globalized education. Education quality is one of the most influential criteria used in rankings. And for successful development of Russian universities in the rankings and achievement of competitive positions detailed analyses of rankings methodologies where universities take part is required. The article reveals interrelation with metrics in different rankings and indicators correlation providing consistent positions in different rankings. The examples of the national Academic Excellence initiatives in different world countries like Russian 5-100 Project are also analyzed. It is shown that universities participation in various rankings allows fully evaluate universities strengths & weaknesses and also institutional position in a single ranking might be the foundation for its positions forecast in another ranking. Based on rankings understanding as university socially approved reputation and sustainability, based on multidimensional characteristics of institutional activities, rankings are becoming valuable tool in institutional competitiveness increase, based on its economic development world class university that can be achieved only by its recognizing by world academic & expert community.
