The city space intergenerational

The role of the environment in the age of late modernity is critically different from the modern. The area we inhabit is no longer just a part of the environment, but the structural element of the modern person's life. At the same time, not only the environment and the spatial aspect are different, our perception of these differ too and both have certain impact upon the changing environmental factor. It is feasible to use the "generation theory" in order explain both the direction and the contents of the change. According to the "generation theory", different generations have different values underlying their attitudes and behavior. At present time the most active generations are late representatives of the "baby boomers" (years of birth 1943-1963), so called "generation X" (1964-1983), and "generation Y" (1984-2003) that are becoming more and more prominent and active. Of the above, the generation X are most active in forming urban space around it and at the same time most active in consuming the urban space economically. The basic values of the generation X are mobility, freedom of choice, the capability of being globally informed, technical proficiency, individualism, readiness to change and to learn, eagerness to get new experience, pragmatism and self-sufficiency. For the generation X people the environment forms the basis of the habitat and constitutes the key factor of their choice. For the generation Y the environment plays even more profound role, since they are more mobile and share the attitude that everything, career, education and consumption might and hopefully will serve sources of fun and pleasure. The article is based upon two research project dedicated to the qualities and the quality of living in the city of Tomsk.
