Transstructural urban studies: a critical analysis

The article replying to Irina Savchenko’s “Discursive Urbanism: Method Search” analyzes the advantages and controversial elements of the transstructural method Savchenko proposed as a tool for studying urban communities. The obvious advantages of the method are emphasized: interdisciplinary integration of knowledge about the city, applicability for describing nonlinear transformations of megacities, effectiveness of the method for fixing latent “tension points” and forecasting changes in urban communities. At the same time, the excessive metaphorization characteristic of the method is noted. The limits of the applicability of the approach for different types of cities are discussed. The question is raised as to how effective the method is for responding to modern social challenges such as digital inequality and gentrification. The author declares no conflicts of interests.
