Discordant profiles of academic habitus in the conditions of academic practice commercialization

The reasons for the formation and spread of the practice of academic capitalism are considered. It is argued that the commercialization of the academic sphere is not only the effect of the spread of neoliberalism, but also the result of the activities of the academic community itself. The author asks the questions of which understanding of entrepreneurship underlies today's practice of academic capitalism, how it is realized, which common and different features the academic sphere and business have. It is shown that entrepreneurship is a product of agent-subject determination; it is represented by a variety of forms, which creates uncertainty in the use of this term in the academic practice analysis and the impossibility of its reducing entirely to the economic aspect. The forms of entrepreneurship in the academic sphere such as academic, research and educational are identified. It is stated that the formation and spread of the practice of academic capitalism is accompanied by a variety of behavioral models of academic community representatives. The author introduces the notion of profiles of the academic habitus represented by a set of typical forms of activity that characterize the modern practice of academic capitalism and form the dynamic framework depending on institutional structures and personal dispositions. As evidence, the author refers to the results of empirical studies, according to which the academic community is exposed to diversification and it is multilayered. It is concluded that interaction between the economy and the academic sphere is asymmetric. The reduction of government spending, the disposal of different types of academic activities and the formation of the “market” profile of the academic habitus make it necessary to preserve the academic sphere as an organization whose entrepreneurship consists in the universalization of knowledge as a public good.
