Multilingualism in Motion: Evolution of the Phenomenon
This article aims to trace how multilingualism as a phenomenon of human culture is changing. Multilingualism is interpreted both as a social phenomenon and as a set of diverse practices of language use. The analysis of factors affecting the quality of multilingualism is carried out in line with the theory of social change. The article considers the geographical, social and media factors affecting the growth and functioning of multilingualism in the diachronic perspective. Despite the uneven spread of multilingualism, both among social groups and geographically, at the moment it is a qualitatively and quantitatively different phenomenon. Although the human race has been accompanied by multilingualism throughout its history, the emergence of national states has led to the consolidation of the notion of monolingualism as a norm. Today, in a globalizing world, we observe a departure from the monolingual paradigm. Multilingualism is positively perceived by both the general public and researchers. Foreign language proficiency is becoming an essential component of communicative literacy. This applies to the wide sectors of the population, not to the elites and individual social groups as before. The multilingualism of people and societies has increased so much that we can speak about the emergence of a multilingual economy or linguanomics. Not all languages are equally in demand in linguanomics: the so called world languages are more attractive. This phenomenon is criticized as linguistic imperialism. With the introduction of digital technologies, access to foreign language information is exceptionally fast and easy. These technologies, combined with mobility of different types, give rise to a situation of translocality in which the changing language environment remains connected to the native language space. The analysis shows that in the context of globalization multilingualism becomes an emergent phenomenon that produces a systemic effect in a global perspective.
