Loyalty of the Armed Forces and Its Empirical Research: The Russo- Japanese War and World War I
An important factor of combat effectiveness of any army is its morale, which is largely based on its loyalty to the relevant state (government) and social order. The article raises the problem of an objective study of the loyalty of the armed forces during wartime. The main object of analysis is the Russian Imperial Army during the Russo-Japanese and the First World Wars. The author proposes to explore the loyalty of the armed forces using the appropriate indicator. Its values are calculated on the basis of empirical data on various types of combat casualties (killed, wounded and taken prisoner). The differences in loyalty of different types of troops (infantry, cavalry, artillery, engineering and Cossack troops, as well as border guards), on the one hand, are analyzed, and the loyalty of officers and soldiers of lower ranks in the army of the Russian Empire, on the other. In terms of loyalty to the state during the Russo-Japanese and the First World Wars, officers of the Russian Imperial Army, as a rule, outstripped the lower ranks. The greater level of loyalty of officers during the Russo-Japanese War, in particular, is indicated by differences in the nature of injuries received by officers and lower ranks on the battlefield, as well as by differences in the causes of their injuries. In the course of the Russo-Japanese War, officers of the border guard, engineering troops and cavalry, as well as lower ranks of cavalry, demonstrated the most loyalty, and the officers of artillery and the lower ranks of the engineering troops and artillery the least. During the First World War, officers of Cossack troops, border guards and cavalry showed the greatest loyalty; and the loyalty level of officers of artillery, engineering troops and infantry was noticeably behind. Differences in loyalty of different contingent categories were due to the social origin of the officers and the lower ranks, as well as the type of military activity characteristic of different types of troops. There were noticeable differences in the degrees of loyalty of the troops of the Russian Empire and Japan, as well as of the armed forces of the main countries participating in the First World War. These differences were among the factors that determined the outcomes of the Russo-Japanese and the First World Wars.
