Social Constructing in the Network Approach
This article discusses the role of social constructing as an epistemological position essential for the development of the network approach and for the expansion of network tools. Differences both in the theoretical grounds and in the methodological foundation of the key directions of the network approach are stated. The main questions that are to be answered by the three trends of the network approach: social network analysis, relational sociology, and actor-network theory, are identified. The ontological status of social networks is specified. The continuity and relevance of the network approach to the ideas of structuralism are recognized. The idea is substantiated that finding optimal tools to answer the questions requires a "social network" construct presented as an abstract object. It is argued that researchers' work with a truncated part of a network construct, aimed at analyzing only the measured characteristics of an object, can produce inaccurate and distorted results. Thus, researchers of social networks often do not take into account unobserved network characteristics: predictors of the proto-network's potential readiness for objectification, network unification, and errors of first-order observers' interpretations. In addition, when working with an already made construct, second-order observers may miss such characteristics of social networks as the plasticity of the network structure, the axiological commonality of network actors and the similarity of their everyday background practices, target diversification. The procedures for constructing an abstract network object are designed to fill these gaps and "complete" the theoretical framework, forming a set of ideas about social networks that are consistent with reality. It is stated that, when constructing a social network, it is necessary to avoid the conviction that the social object is autonomous in relation to the cognizing subject and to reconsider the axiomatic assumptions of some unobserved parameters, characteristics, and properties of the object.
