Comprehending Hume’s Religious-Philosophical Ideas: Practices of Soviet Historiography
The article overviews some of the basic provisions of the Soviet historiography of Hume’s religious-philosophical ideas. The subject of the article is the historical-philosophical reflection of famous national specialists and researchers - S.F. Vasiliev, A.F. Gryaznov, B.V. Meerovsky, Yu.P. Mikhalenko, I.S. Narsky, N.E. Ovander. The aim of the article was to identify the main characteristics of Hume’s religious-philosophical ideas found in the Soviet formational-evolutionist specialized historiography. As a result, the following was stated. Firstly, Soviet specialists and researchers focused on comprehending those Hume’s religious-philosophical ideas, which showed the originality of his skepticism, the originality of his attitude towards materialism and deism. Secondly, they were inclined to see in Hume a philosopher who was rather critical of religion. Thirdly, they often drew attention to the duality and contradictions of Hume’s religious-philosophical ideas. The article is provided with a body of reference in the form of personalities, bibliographic articles, and a dictionary entry.
