Knowledge in the Humanities and the Public Good: Two Examples from Linguistics

This article concerns the problem of science as a public good and the contribution of science to social development. Specifically, it focuses on the possible social benefits of the humanities and social sciences. The article discusses two specific cases from linguistics, in which linguistic knowledge can help to overcome prejudice in society and the harmful social practices associated with it. The discussed cases concern the fight against language prejudices in jurisprudence and judicial practice, and the development of educational programs. The discovery of the truth and objective scientific knowledge potentially beneficial for social development in a certain area are not sufficient for ensuring that this development happens. The popularization of this knowledge in society and demonstration of its use in solving specific problems in the areas external for science turn out to be a separate issue that requires political and social activism and related competencies.
