Contextual aspects of determining the meaning of a language expression
In modern analytic philosophy, a special type of words, whose meanings are very sensitive to the context, is distinguished. Indexical terms such as “I”, “this” or “today” acquire their meanings depending on the speech situation in which they are used. Based on the analysis of such words, an idea is formed of what the context of a language expression is. In general terms, context consists of three components: agent, time and position. However, when analyzing the meaning of legal language ascriptive expressions, we find that sometimes quite different contextual factors influence or determine the meaning. This circumstance determines the need to clarify our ideas about what the context of a linguistic expression is. Depending on these our ideas, the ways of interconnecting words and contextual factors also change. The authors declare no conflicts of interests.
