Key principles of the strategy for overcoming the trend of “absent fatherhood” in contemporary russian society
This article investigates the challenges confronting fathers in contemporary Russia and the adaptation strategies they develop within the context of everyday family practices. Beyond classical destructive manifestations, the identified problems include a lack of understanding of the principles of family relations, the negative impact of individualization, egocentrism, pervasive consumerist imagery, and blurred family and gender roles. Based on a qualitative sociological study comprising semi-structured interviews and focus groups with fathers, the research identifies several adaptive strategies: the provision strategy, reflexive, conformist, dependent, altruistic, qualitative relationship, purpose, and acceptance strategies. As a result of the analysis, the authors propose key components for a comprehensive strategy aimed at overcoming the problem of absent fatherhood. This strategy is grounded in a theoretical framework developed by the authors, stems from the real-world problems faced by modern fathers, and incorporates goal-setting alongside specific actions and practices for transformation at various societal levels. For substantive changes in paternal practices to occur, the following four conditions must be met: systemic societal changes (government policy, the shaping of cultural norms, additional education programs, and efforts to address stereotypes and meanings through media and value management); the institutional incorporation of quality family education and the fostering of a sustained interest in parenting issues (e.g., through universities and registry offices); support from the immediate environment (spouse, friends, specialists, communities); the personal motivation of the father himself. The article offers not only a proposed program of action but also a deeper understanding of the lifeworld of fathers who have successfully implemented changes in their own lives and are prepared to assist others. The authors declare no conflicts of interests.
