A paradigmatic review of theories and studies of well-being

The article presents the potential of Burrell and Morgan’s theory of sociological paradigms for analyzing and mapping well-being theories and research. It is shown that the research space exhibits a paradigmatic structure shaped by the functionalist, radical structuralist, interpretive, and radical humanistic paradigms of the acquired knowledge about well-being. The specificity of the conceptualization of well-being in each paradigm is identified. The results of the analysis are applicable to the development of methods and programs for interdisciplinary and multi-paradigm well-being research based on the study of the conversion of conceptual meanings and corresponding well-being practices during the transition from one paradigm to another. The authors declare no conflicts of interests.
