Academic Journals: Production of Local Reputations

The article examines the formation of academic reputation in Russian sociology (and ultimately thestate of the Russian sociology) through citation analysis of selected Russian sociological journals.Citation analysis focuses on two parameters: institutional affiliation of the authors and the citationpreferences of institutions. The results suggest that the field of sociological publication in Russia (reflectingand reproducing the field of Russian sociology) is divided in isolated segments with fewcitations between different segments. These segments are built - rather than on theoretical disagreements- both on the administrative principles (academic institutions behind the journals) as well as ongeographical factors (mainly Moscow vs. St Petersburg). Ultimately this creates a state of affairswhere researchers reputation is formed within each sociological segment allowing its members toignore not only the remaining sociological journals, but also other segments.
