Epistemological egocentrism in theories of interpretation by Davidson and Gadamer
The article is devoted to comparative analysis of concepts of semantic interpretation developed in Davidson's theory of interpretation and (implicitly) in philosophical hermeneutics by Gadamer. It is demonstrated that Davidsonian "principle of charity" is methodologically equivalent to Gadamer's principle of "fore-conception of completeness", and that both principles imply a methodological attitude of interpreter at the start of interpretation which may be called "epistemological egocentrism".
