Modern Geography of Slavic Toponyms in the Carpathian-Dniester Region: a Geoinformation Approach

The article dwells on modern geography of Slavic toponyms in the Carpathian-Dniester region. The information about the settlements and their names is taken from the Open Street Map. With ArcGIS10.1, the author analyses and maps the location of the settlements with Slavic suffixes. There are 27 suffixal formants of Slavic origin in the territory under study. Taken separately, most of them are distributed randomly. Eight suffixal formants are grouped. They include such formants as -auti, -inti,-ta, -na, -ka, -ava, -i$te, -ovu.The overall percentage of the Slavic toponyms is 28,7 % of all settlements in the area under study. The local percentage of Slavic toponyms increases (from 10 to 70 %), in concentric circles from the uppers of the river Trotush to the northern and eastern periphery of the Carpathian-Dniester region. Slavic toponyms are most common in South Bukovina and Northeast Bessarabia.
