The defence address and concluding statement OF DR. Kassian Dmitrievich bogatyrets before a viennese military court - a remarkable historical document. R.P. Mirovich

The "Defence Address" and "The Concluding Statement" of Father Kassian Bogatyrets at the Second Viennese Trial of 1916-1917 are in the material, which was prepared in due course, for publication by R.D. Mirovich. In his address Father Kassian argumentively, with reference to the works of other well-known scholars and historical facts showed the absurdity of considering belonging to Panslavism, Russophilism and Orthodoxy as a basis for treason. The material is composed of three parts. The first part, written by R. Mirovich himself, is composed of "The Defence Address and Concluding Statement of Dr. Kassian Bogatyrets before a Viennese Military Court - a Remarkable Historical Document", a pre-history of the given trial: the 1914 Trial of L'viv, repression during the war, the first Viennese Trial and the brave stance of Father Kassian at the Second Viennese Trial. The second and third parts cite the full texts of "The Defence Address of Dr. Kassian Dmitrievich Bogatyrets given on Sept. 6, 7, and 8, 1916 before the Viennese Military Court Regarding Treason" and "The Last Word of Dr. K.D. Bogatyrets Given Before the Viennese Military Court Before Conviction on January 25,1917". Despite the brilliant address of Father Kassian, he and 15 other accused were sentenced to death for "treason". They managed to avoid this sentence because of the amnesty granted them in the Spring of 1917 by the new emperor of Austro-Hungary Charles I. This is the first publication of R. Mirovich's work.
