M.A. Kachkovskii - patriot i metsenat [M.A. Kachkovskii - Patriot and Patron]
M.A. Kachkovskii (1802-72) spent most of his life (1829-1872) as an ordinary judicial official. Only upon retirement did he receive the rank of adviser to the Higher Court of the Land. He lived a humble life, was loyal to Austrian authority, honorably fuLfuLLed his duty. He was keenly interested in reading the literature about the history of Galician Russ, the works of his contemporaries, the Austrian Rusins. Possibly history would not have safe-guarded his name for us. However, M. Kachkovskii, who limited himself in everything, was able to save a relatively large sum of money, even though he earned a lower income. In 1861 Kachkovskii founded in L'vov the newspaper "The Word". All of his capital he bequeathed for national purposes. On the initiative of I.G. Naumovich (1826-1891) "The Society in the Name of M. Kachkovskii" was founded using these funds. Thanks to the help of M. Kachkovskii the Russian Movement in Galicia arose and strengthened. As M.S. Hrushevskii wrote: "Not even talking about Transcarpathian Ukraine, all national organizations in Galician and Bukovina were in the hands of the Moscophiles and the Popular Movement from the end of the 1860's and then in the 1870's was represented only by small circles, supported by poor means and cultural forces".
