In the material the evidence of Dr. V. Vondrak, Professor of the University of Vienna, is presented. This evidence was excerpted from the stenographic protocol of a session of a military divisional trial in Vienna in which the activity of a deputy of the Austrian Parliament, Dr. D.A. Markov and six of his compatriots were under examination. The First Viennese Trial occurred from June 21 to August 21, 1915. The defendants were accused of being members of the "Russian National Council" and other Russian societies and as founders of the "Carpatho-Russian Liberation Committee". They were accused of being active in instigating and carrying out "russophile agitation". Seven people were charged for high treason. During the trial forty plus volumes of stenographic reports were documented and all accused were sentenced to death by hanging. Thanks to the intercession of the Spanish king the execution was changed to life imprisonment. (During the war, Spain represented the interests of Russia in Germany and Austro-Hungary). V. Vondrak, as an expert, stated his opinion about the origin and role of the Russian Literary Language and its relationship to the diverse Russian dialects. The scholarly evidence was presented at the 15th session of the trial on July 7. 1915 and was extracted from the stenographic records (v. 6, pages 1420-1468). They were prepared and printed in a booklet with parallel Russian translation in 1924 in L'vov by the well-known activist of the Russian Movement in Galicia Iu.A. Iavorskii.
