The use of Russian Science Citation Index for evaluation of humanities research
The article examines competitive advantages of the Russian Science Citation Index (RSCI) for analyzing publications in the humanities in Russia, especially compared to the Web of Science. It studies foreign journals' presence in the RSCI, as well as novelties introduced such as the 'context of citation' and Herfindahl index. The author also draws attention to some disadvantages of the database that result in an incorrect representation of data and record of indicators and stresses that in order to evaluate research any scientometric indicators should be combined with qualitative evaluation. General suggestions are put forward as to how to improve the visibility of Russian science abroad and it is concluded that at present none of the indices gives a clear idea of the position of Russian science in the world.
