From STS to VSTS: methodological issues in visual research of laboratory practices and the potential of camera ethnography
The article discusses the field of VSTS, that is, STS and visual research merged together, with a particular emphasis on its potential for complementing already collected materials with visual data. It describes specific features of gathering ethnographic material as well as different approaches to filming and analysing visual material in STS, namely, video-analysis, analysis of interactions, and ethnomethodology. The article aims to demonstrate the imperfection of existing approaches and attempts to suggest using video-ethnography as an effective tool for visual research into laboratory practices. It presents camera ethnography, an approach proposed by Bina Mohn, as one of the possible ways of solving methodological issues associated with the lack of theoretical foundations in the video-ethnography of science and technology. It also raises the question of absence of a full-fledged methodology not only in the case of VSTS but also in visual research on the whole - the fact that, according to the author, points to the fragmented nature of current theoretical approaches.
