Health literacy among patients in Russia as assessed by Russian physicians

At present, patients' health literacy is becoming an important vector of healthcare system development in many countries. There already exist numerous approaches to measuring and improving health literacy, which not only help better the quality of medical care, but also reduce costs of its provision. The article describes the concept of health literacy and approaches to the study of this concept in both Russia and abroad, and discusses the results of an online survey of 69 physicians from different regions of Russia who were asked to assess the current level of their patients' health literacy. The physicians also shared their opinion as to what exactly patients should know about their health and the health of their relatives when being at home or in hospital, and how the Internet influences health literacy.
