Volodymyr Okhrymovych and the road to Siberia
The readers are invited to familiarize themselves with the article by Volodymyr Okhrymovych, entitled 'The Angara region and its inhabitants: The Tungus and the Chaldon people' (1920) and offered here in Russian translation. In the article, the Ukrainian politician and researcher, who was in administrative exile in Eastern Siberia from 1915 to 1917, describes the flora and fauna around him, as well as the economy, life and traditions of the Ev-enks ('Tungus') and of the descendants of the first Russian settlers ('Chaldons'). йдьот па улще, пграт; // шапочька, тужурочька, // харошая фпурочька». Далее Охримович поясняет: «В переводе это значит: По селу Гольтявину (ведет) торная дорожка, интересно посмотреть из хаты в окошко: мой миленький-виноград идет по улице и играет, (на нем) шапочка и тужурочка, (и у самого) хорошая фигура». The translator's preface expands on the author's road to Siberia and the conditions of his stay there. Also provided are comments on some distinctive features of the language Okhry- movych used, as well as on the details of translation.
