Dialects as markers of regional identity in contemporary northern England

The article presents the discourse of identity of the Northern English people (Northerness), and investigates where geographical and cultural boundaries lie in Northern England, and how the region was and is perceived by the English. It focuses on language and Northern English dialects, specifically, as well as on the language policy of central radio and television broadcasting companies, and on literature on dialects - the themes the discourse of Northerness is centred around. The language here serves as a marker of identity and communicative space. The study presented in the article is based on a variety of historiographic, media, and museum-related sources, as well as on the author's own field materials collected from 2010 to 2018.
