‘Chinese’ markets and urban mobilities: public transport system in everyday life in the city (the case of Irkutsk)

‘Chinese’ markets make up a significant part of the city and city dwellers’ life. These are a place for daily contacts, regular visits, and intensive traffic. In this regard, of special importance is the relationship between the markets and the city’s public transport system, an analysis of which points to the influence of the markets on the formation and development of urban mobilities and determines the present research task. In her analysis, the author draws on the theory of mobilities and conceptualizes the city as a centre of movement, the public transport system as one of the major elements of the urban space, and the ‘Chinese’ markets as a specific locality anchored in the physical space. The case study of Irkutsk allows identify hidden mechanisms of transformation of the city and its mobilities under the influence of the ‘Chinese’ markets which play a key role in this process.
