Uncompleted construction of the imperfect

The article discusses the three contributions comprising this issue's thematic section on 'unfinished' Soviet cities in the context of existing conceptualizations of modernity, modernization, and planning. The articles by Ilchenko, Stas, and Dukhanov are juxtaposed with the works by Mike Davis, Donald Filtzer, and Zygmunt Bauman in order to see what wide-ranging meanings the Soviet planning failures could have for the world history of modernity and modernization.
