The Buddhist ritual dagger 'phurpa'

On the basis of a detailed examination of available historiographic materials, the author reveals a number of understudied aspects in the analysis of the phurpa dagger, one of the most enigmatic ritual attributes of northern Buddhism. An overview of the collection of the State Museum of Oriental Art (Moscow) and ritual texts provide an opportunity for a thorough study of forms and iconography of daggers and help clarify the purpose and methods of their use in ritual practice. Consideration of the materials presented in a coherent manner made it possible to express doubts about the Indian origin of the ritual phurpa practice.
