Repatriation of symbolic capital and identity crisis during migration from the former Soviet Union to Greece (from the 1990 to 2000s)
In the article, the problem of identity crisis is addressed in the context of migration from ex-Soviet countries to Greece, the so-called repatriation. Field materials collected in Greece and Russia constituted the basis of the article which is focused on narratives of a migrant from Georgia. The narratives tell about the reasons for his migration to Greece, about how he adjusted to life in Greece, what problems he encountered, why he does not want to come back, and how he views his migration. The analysis draws on the Pierre Bourdieu theory of capital; its relevancy for migration research is given special attention. The aim of this article is to examine efficiency of cross-border transfer of migrants' symbolic capital and connection of this efficiency to identity crisis. The author concludes that a weaker symbolic capital accumulated in the migrant's home country assists more successful appropriation and does not lead to deskillisation and social deterioration, whereas a stronger symbolic capital is usually bad luggage for migration in terms of appropriation. However, it plays an important role in matrimonial strategies and intra-group relationships, and the failure to transfer and confirm strong symbolic capitals leads to both deskillisation and identity crisis.
