Introduction to the special issue

The introductory article presents ethnobotany as seen by the French-Canadian researchers Jacques Rousseau and Daniel Clement. It traces the development of their ideas from the accumulation and initial analysis of the field's material to the understanding of ethnobot any as an ethno-science, where the object of study is the views that the holders of ethnobotani-cal knowledge themselves (in this case, the Innu people) have of the flora. The article also provides an overview of the special issue content. The ethnobotany of North America is discussed in the article by Daniel Clement about the role of plants in the Innu shaking tent ritual. The article by Nikolay V. Rakuts and Maya L. Dubossarskaya about the Jesuit contribution to the ethnobotany of South America and that by A.A Matusovskiy about the cultivation of bitter manioc by different groups in Amazonia and Orinocia draw on South American materials.
