The role of plants in the Innu ritual of the shaking tent
The Innu are an indigenous people of the Canadian Subarctic. Hunters, gatherers and fishermen by tradition, they used to hold a shaking tent ceremony. During the ritual, a shaman entered a special conical structure to communicate with different entities mainly to foretell future events and ensure success in hunting. This article examines the plants related to the practice - either the species used for the structure as cover and floor mat or the ones that are or could be inhaled, offered or ingested as part of the ritual. A comparison with the ceremony held by neighbouring Algonquian groups helps us understand the crucial role of trees in the rite: considered as true living beings, they are intimately related to the shaman himself and to his personal power as expressed in his capacity to communicate with spiritual entities after entering the tent.
